Autorun or Autoplay are extended, automatic functions associated
with removable media such as CD's and DVD's. The foundation
of this functionality is the "auto insert notification" support
in the device driver. When Windows detects that a disk has
been inserted, it looks in the disk's root directory, finds,
reads and follows specific instructions defined in a text
based configuration file, Autorun.inf.
The Autorun.inf file defines the process or application that
will automatically run when a disk is inserted. For an enhanced
CD, the host computer runs the executable defined in this
file. This executable starts the presentation
The Auto insert notification also plays audio CDs automatically
as defined by user settings on the host computer. Among other
things, these settings can specify the default CD player and
whether or not it begins playing automatically or waits for
user input. Other enhanced CDs must over-ride these user settings
to play the presentation. Enhanced CDs created with CD Ultra
preserve and follow the user settings on the host computer
and still add autorun functionality to the presentation.
The Autorun file can also define the following:
- The Icon that will represent the enhanced CD presentation
when the drive is viewed with My Computer or Explorer.
- Menu commands displayed when the user right-clicks the
CD-ROM icon from My Computer or Explorer.
Note: Autorun can be disabled by the user through
the device manager or with an entry in SYSTEM.INI.
